Community & Home Supports, Inc. [CHS] announced John Stoyka has been named executive director of the Detroit-based nonprofit which serves individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Detroit, MI by providing housing, financial assistance, and counseling. He has been active in the role since July, 2019.
He succeeds Nathaniel Warshay, who served the organization from 2013 to 2019.
“John’s background in urban planning and development as well as his passion for community activism made his appointment as executive director an important step in our advancing our mission,” said CHS Board Chairman Marcel Santiz. “John has a track record of strong leadership. This combined with his industry knowledge and Agency tenure makes him distinctively qualified to lead CHS successfully into the future.”
Stoyka holds a Bachelor’s in Urban Studies from the University of Washington and a Master’s in Urban Planning from Wayne State University. His studies focused on addressing concentrated poverty through local government cooperation in metropolitan regions. He also served in the U.S. Army as an active duty member from 2001 through 2004. Before coming to CHS, John held positions in the Veteran’s Administration and served as a faith-based community organizer. John is a native Michigander who grew up in the Downriver area. He currently resides in Southfield, MI.

This means increasing the intensity of supportive services that we’re able to provide our clientele such as job training, education, training around community organizing for positive change in their communities, and health and nutrition education to name a few.”
