In 2008 Sharon Lapidas was Homeless Services Director at a Detroit organization called Care Givers. When Care Givers closed its doors, Sharon salvaged some of the programming and funding and created a new organization called Family Care Network. The organization was incorporated that year, changed its name to Community & Home Supports Inc. (CHS), and began operating with a budget roughly $600,000 to $900,000.

Originally, CHS continued its adult home care program and also performed intake and assessment for homeless families, while referring homeless singles to Neighborhood Legal Services. We also helped families faced with utility shutoffs and evictions.

Nathaniel Warshay took over in early 2014. He was involved with the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM) planning, and CHS wrote the original CAM grant with the Homeless Action Network of Detroit (HAND) and the Continuum of Care (CoC). CAM launched in 2015, with CHS on the frontline performing intake and assessment, and Nathaniel grew our government and private funding to $2 million. CHS also began operating Simon House, an 11-unit affordable housing complex.

In early 2019 John Stoyka took the helm. John had been in a broadly defined role as Intake Coordinator. He closed down the home care services to focus on the homeless programs. John brought in more money and more staff, formed departments and teams, and developed an active Board of Directors. Under his tutelage, the funding has grown from $2 million to $6 million, and the staff has more than doubled. We continue to be of service to more people in more programs and continue to advocate for the homeless.
